Mataranka building relationships key to success; Looking at Nutrien Equine Sydney Sale this weekend

Building relationships with buyers has been a big part of Denis and Jo Howe’s success in the standardbred breeding industry.

“We always follow up and touch base with buyers,” said Denis, who has been taking yearlings to sales for about 20 years after it started out as a hobby.

“We’ve built some good relationships.

“We have made some real good friends after selling horses to them,” he said.

The Howes will be looking to either build on those at the Nutrien Equine Standard Yearling Sale in Sydney on Sunday, February 20.

Their Wagga-based Mataranka Park Standardbreds are taking four lots to the Inglis Riverside Stables at Warwick Farm.

They are hoping to build on the quartet the family offered at last year’s inaugural Nutrien Equine sale in Melbourne, where all four attracted more than $20,000, with an Art Major-Hows The Memory filly going for $41,000.

While Hows The Memory is not represented this time, her dam Distant Memory has a Bettors Delight colt going under the hammer.

Here’s how Dennis Howe sees their lots:

Lot 53 – Sweet Lou US-Custom Franco NZ filly

“She’s athletic and well put together.”

He says she’s not a typical Sweet Lou though in looks.

Many of his progeny inheriting his stand-out white blaze.

“There’s not a white hair on her.”

The filly is a half-sister to four winners, including Invest (Christian Cullen NZ) 6 wins and The Pima Indian (Changeover NZ) 6 wins.

Lot 57 – Bettors Delight US-Distant Memory colt

“He’s a lovely horse – a nice colt.

“He’s not big, but he’s very correct  – a lovely horse.”

Distant Memory was one of 14 winners out of Macrandra, including six bred by the Howes.

In her own right Distant Memory won 10 races, including the 2013 group 1 Bathurst Tiara Final and group 1 Vicbred Super Series 2yo final.

Distant Memory has left four winners, including Hows The Memory (Mach Three Ca) 1:150.1, 15 wins, $154,000; listed winner Bench Memories (Somebeachsomewhere US) 1:53.4, 15 wins; Delightful Angel (Bettors Delight) 1:53.5 4 wins; and Something Bettor (Bettors Delight) 1:58.3 3 wins.

Howe said there was a tendency for the family to get better with age.

Lot 60 – Art Major US-Equus Franco NZ colt

“He’s not big, but he’s still a good size.

“He is a nice type and she’s (the mare) has left some big earners.”

This is the Howe’s second foal out of Equus Franco, which has left four winners including Flem N Em NZ (Courage Under Fire NZ) 1:49.6, 61 wins, $980,000; and Glenferrie Bronte NZ (Changeover NZ) 1:51.4, 42 wins, $440,000.

Lot 71 – Art Major US-In Her Memory colt
He’s a cracker. He’s outstanding.

“He’s one of the best Art Majors on type I’ve bred.

“He really catches the eye.

“We have a few people inspecting our lots. Some didn’t have him marked when they came, but went away with a tick on his page.”

He is the third foal out of In Her Memory, which was bred by the Howes and won three races.

He is a half-sister to Secret Smile (Grinfromeartoear US) 1:53.4, 17 wins, $84,000.

Yearlings will all be on site this afternoon with our Yearling Parade starting at 6pm on site.

Sweet legacy for Vincent Colt in the sale for Joanne Andersen

Joanne Andersen knows as well as anyone the highs and lows of the standardbred breeding games.

The Hawkesbury horsewoman has experienced each end of the scale over the decade she has been taking yearlings to the sales.

Three years ago she had a sales topper with a Captaintreacherous-Sweet As Reign colt being knocked down to Emilio and Mary Rosati for $130,000 in Sydney.

It was a stunning outcome. At that point in time Sweet As Reign had produced four winners.

“We’ve done pretty well for small breeders. That was an outstanding result,” Andersen said.

Sadly for Andersen and husband Brett and partners Darren and Tina Stevens, the Captaintreacherous colt would be the last foal Sweet As Reign would leave.

The mare and an unborn Sweet Lou foal died in 2020.

While Sweet As Reign is gone, there is a close connection to the two lots the Andersens and Stevens have going under the hammer at the Nutrien Equine Standardbred Yearling Sale in Sydney on Sunday, February 20.

Lot 72 is a Vincent colt out of Courage Under Fire mare Itz Reigning Men – a daughter and the only living mare out of Sweet As Reign.

This is the first foal out of Itz Reigning Men, which had to be retired prematurely from racing after just eight starts as a result of a trial fall.

“He’s outstanding,” Andersen said.

“He’s a really good type, beautiful.

“It’s been a great family and we’re excited with this first foal of Itz Reigning Men,” she said.
Retaining Itz Reigning Men as part of their select group of broodmares is part of a strategy that also sees them selling foals to help finance the operation and as required bringing in new acquisitions to refresh or maintain their broodmare line-up.

It was the latter that provides the story behind lot 68 – a colt from the first crop of Lazarus and out of Rock N Roll Heaven mare Heavenly Bread.

When Sweet as Reign was lost, Andersen went on the lookout for a replacement.

“It was pretty tragic for us. We needed to replace her.”

She said Heavenly Bread – a half-sister to champion racemare Our Golden Goddess (1:53.1 17 wins, $442,410) – was on the market.

While she had had two foals, both had raced had moderately performed, but for Andersen the opportunity was too good not to take up, being from such a terrific family.

Heavenly Bread was unraced after breaking a hock as a yearling.

Andersen has high hopes for the colt at the sale.

“He’s a lovely type, big and strong.

“He looks like Lazarus. Almost black.”

Andersen is confident the colt will attract his share of interest given he is so closely related to Our Golden Goddess, after her first foal (by Bettors Delight) brought $180,000 at the Nutrien Equine Standardbred Yearling Sale in Melbourne last year and also that the first Australian crop of Lazarus totaled only 40.

He is one of only five Lazarus foals being offered the Nutrien Equine Standardbred Yearling Sales in Sydney and Melbourne.

Andersen has also prepared lot 35 in Sydney – a Hurrikane Kingcole colt out of Pacific Fella mare Annabella Crabtree for Victorian breeder Frank McGrath.

It had been on her recommendation that the colt goes through the ring in Sydney rather than Melbourne on April 11.

Andersen said he was Qbred and there were many New South Wales trainers who liked to campaign horses in Queensland.

The colt is one of nine foals from the last crop of the ill-fated Hurrikane Kingcole, which has had 60 individual winners from 81 starters.

Andersen said he was a big loss to the breeding industry, which had been in need of more of the Cam Fella bloodline, with Hurrikane Kingcole being by Cam’s Card Shark, a son of Cam Fella.

She said the colt has progressed quickly in the few weeks he had been with her.

“He’s a nice long colt with plenty of scope. He’s willing to learn.”

Andersen did not take any yearlings to the sales last year, so the Harness Breeders NSW life member is looking forward to linking up with Nutrien Equine for the first time.

Over her time with standardbreds she’s been able to learn from the likes of Dennis Wilson, Lou Cini and Alabar Farms, and in turn, set up services such as Bred In The Blue – providing standardbred racehorse breeding consultative and promotion – and Harness Trading Ring Australia.

Nutrien Equine begins yet another chapter in her life with horses which began as a youngster some four decades ago.

Memories from Medowie Prince to live on at Sydney Sale

When the Reay family decided to set up a new breeding operation in the Hunter region near Newcastle in 1999 there was never much doubt about what name it would be given.

Tom Reay had bred standardbreds most of his life and enjoyed some of his greatest moments with pacer Medowie Prince in the early 1990s.

Medowie Prince won 33 races for $198,510, with his biggest wins including the 1993 Newcastle Invitation Mile and 1994 Bohemia Crystal Free-For-All at Harold Park, in addition to contesting the 1994 Inter Dominion Championship final at Harold Park.

So keen to see the memory of the pacer he bred live on, Medowie Lodge it was.

Medowie Lodge deals in all aspects of the breeding industry – standing resident stallions, breeding to their own and outside mares, breaking in and training.

When it comes to breeding to their own mares, Tom’s son Darren Reay says the family has always had a varied approach with the foals – putting some through the sale ring while retaining others for racing and breeding purposes.

“Dad would always take three or four to the sales. We’ve probably increased the numbers in the past decade.”

This year Medowie Lodge is offering three foals under its own banner at the Nutrien Equine Standardbred Yearling Sale in Sydney on Sunday, February 20 – a colt and filly by Sweet Lou and a filly by Bling It On.

Lot 66 is a Sweet Lou colt out of Bettors Delight mare Glory Daze.

Medowie Lodge sold an American Ideal colt out of Glory Daze for $30,000 at last year’s inaugural Nutrien Equine Standardbred Yearling Sale in Melbourne.

Darren Reay is delighted with Glory Daze’s Sweet Lou colt.

“He’s a really nice type, nicely put together and well grown.”

Glory Daze, which won nine races and was placed in group 2 and 3 company, is relatively new to Medowie Lodge’s broodmare ranks.

Reay purchased her in foal to American Ideal, with him describing the acquisition as a “bit of a steal” based on what they out-laid.

He said getting a Bettors Delight mare was the big attraction, and the cross with Sweet Lou was a perfect match.

“I’m big on broodmare sires and everything lined up for me in taking Glory Daze to Sweet Lou, which we’ve got a big opinion of.”

And just to add to that theme, for Reay, Glory Daze is out of a Troublemaker mare in Dazed And Confused (winner of 12 races and dam of five winners).

Reay said New Zealand breeders had always been big on broodmare sires, more so than Australian breeders, and he was keen to take a leaf out their book.

Medowie Lodge also has Lot 86, a Bling It On filly out of Modern Babe.

Reay said Modern Babe was doing a “sensational” job.

She has had two foals to the races, with now 6yo Ultra Bliss (Blissfull Hall) an eight-time winner and 3yo filly Silk Cloud (Shadow Play) a four-time winner as a 2yo.

Silk Cloud had an outstanding first season on the track, winning the group 2 Pink Bonnet,  and finishing second in the group 1 NSW Breeders Challenge 2yo fillies’ final and third in the group 1 Bathurst Gold Tiara.

There are few more consistent pacers than Ultra Bliss, which in addition to his wins has been placed 34 times and along the way collected the Newcastle horse of the year award.

Modern Babe was bred Medowie Lodge, which purchased her mother Flawless Babe (Windshield Wiper) as a yearling.

Flawless Babe was a half-sister to Step Outside, which had the rare distinction of winning the NSW Sires Stakes fillies and mares finals as a two, three and four-year-old.

Reay said being by Windshield Wiper was also a big appeal in securing Modern Babe.

“She had broodmare written all over.”

Lot 99, a Sweet Lou filly out of NZ-bred Our Expressive Art (Badlands Hanover) completes Medowie Lodge’s consignment.

“We purchased the mare after her racing career (which produced six wins).”

This is Our Expressive Art’s third foal.

Leay said each of her previous two foals – Billie Dee (Captaintreacherous) and Artful Babe (Roll With Joe) – had been winners as two-year-olds, although Billie Dee had unfortunately succumb to illness before being able to fully realise her potential.

He said keen to ensure they would be able to extend this bloodline, they had kept Artful Babe.

“It’s insurance. You can’t get any more Roll With Joes.”

In addition to their own offerings, Medowie Lodge has prepared two lots for Col Slade for the Sydney sale.

Lot 1 – Always B Miki-Rangiann (John Street North) colt

Lot 50 – Always B Miki-Chloes Courage (Courage Under Fire) filly

Introduce world class trotting bloodlines and with it take the standard of the trotting gait on the track in Australia to a whole new level.

This became a passion for Pat Driscoll after witnessing in person one of Europe’s biggest trotting races – the Prix d’Amerique.

Determined to make his dream a reality, he would establish his own little piece of Europe on Australian shores in 2015 – Haras des Trotteurs, predominantly offering the best French stallions to Australasian breeders, alongside his breeding and racing arm Yabby Dam Farms – at a state-of-the-art facility near Ballarat.

He’s delivered big time, with legendary French sire Love You anchoring ever-expanding stallion offerings.

Driscoll has not limited his focus on stallions though.

He’s taken every opportunity to purchase overseas-bred mares from Europe and North America as well as the best available from Australasia to build on his breeding stock and ultimately the quality of the racing product.

Success has followed in a big way, with many wins for him in age classics and open class features.

Up to a couple of years ago Driscoll raced most of the foals he bred, but now he is taking a different direction.

He is offering the vast majority of the yearlings he breeds to the greater harness racing population through the sale ring.

And in addition, to encourage and build on what has been a growing interest in the trotting gait across the harness racing industry, Driscoll’s Haras des Trotteurs has became the sponsor of a new race series linked to the Nutrien Equine standardbred yearling sales.

For the second year in a row, Yabby Dam Farms is offering the biggest consignment of trotters of any breeder at the Nutrien Equine Standardbred Yearling Sales, with 25 lots going to the Melbourne sale at Oaklands Junction on Sunday, April 3.

Yabby Dam Farms led the way at Nutrien Equine’s inaugural standardbred yearling sale in Melbourne last year.

They had 29 lots sell at an average of $40,931.

This included $170,000 for a Father Patrick colt out of multiple group one-winning mare Une Belle Allure – the highest price ever for a trotting yearling in Australia.

This year’s Yabby Dam Farms consignment includes 12 foals by US-bred Swedish group 1 winner Volstead, which has been part of the Haras des Trotteurs stallion roster.

Six other lots are by Love You and three by Quaker Jet Fra, a son of Love You and member of the Haras des Trotteurs stallion line-up.

There are also three by Father Patrick Us and one by What The Hill Ca.

The lots also include the progeny of an array of overseas-bred mares from France, Canada, United States and New Zealand, including daughters of champion French sires Ready Cash and Coktail Jet.

They include:

Lot 125: VOLSTEAD US-ANOTHER PLAYER NZ (Dr Ronerail US) filly. Another Player is the dam of multiple US-winner Majestic Player – the fastest ever Australasian-bred trotter.

Lot 159: FATHER PATRICK US-ELUSIVE JET Fra (Coktail Jet Fra) filly. Elusive Jet is a full sister to  group 1 European Derby winner Dro de Jet Fra.

Lot 160: FATHER PATRICK US-ALDEBARAN EVE (Skyvalley NZ) filly.  Aldebaran Eve was a multiple group 1 winner.

Lot 218: QUAKER JET Fra-PRETTY PEGGY SUE (Pegasus Spur US) filly. Half-sister to group 1 winners Kinvara Sue and Pretty Majestic.

In association with the sale, Yabby Dam Farms are offering a travel rebate of any YDF yearling purchase at the sale where the yearling is exported to
New Zealand within 60 days after the sale.

The export rebate will be A$500 per A$10,000 spend or part thereof, to a maximum of A$5000, payable on receipt of a paid travel invoice.

With the sponsorship of Haras de Trotteurs, all trotting yearlings sold at this year’s Nutrien Equine sales, including Sydney on Sunday, February 20, will be eligible to contest a race series in Melbourne in 2023 and 2024.

The 2023 trotting series will carry an overall stake of $125,000 with separate $62,500 divisions for two-year-old colts and fillies.

Graduates of the 2022 sale will also be eligible to compete for a further $250,000 as three-year-olds in 2024.

Pat Driscoll has already made a massive mark on the trotting breed in Australia.

With his own breeding programs and continued drive to make world class stallions available to southern hemisphere breeders, his legacy is only going to get greater.

His involvement and partnerships with Nutrien Equine all point to even greater opportunities for the industry and more exciting times for the trotter in Australia.

The Howe family from Wagga Wagga catalogued four yearlings at the inaugural Nutrien Yearling Sale.

All four were sold at an average price of $28,375 and Lot 73 which is now gelded and named Shantilly became the first product of a Nutrien Standardbred yearling sale to win when he won on debut at Menangle last Tuesday. *pictured

Denis Howe who has been breeding Standardbreds for the best part of 20 years has a further four yearlings in the 2022 Nutrien Sydney Yearling Sale on February 20th.

The quartet are all by highly commercial proven stallions in Sweet Lou, Bettors Delight and two by Art Major.

Shantilly was a lovely yearling and just so easy to get along with which is half the battle,” Denis said earlier this week.

“Of this year’s group Lots 57 and 71 are similar in temperament and have come along nicely since we brought them in to begin their sale prep.”

Lot 57 is a colt by Bettors Delight from the Bathurst Gold Tiara winner Distant Memory p,3,1:55.1 $173,155 who is a half-sister to the grand-dam of last Friday night’s impressive Gloucester Park winner Sahara Storm.

Distant Memory has already produced four winners including Hows The Memory p,1:50.1 $154,424 and last season’s smart 2yo Beach Memories p,2,1:53.4 $48,804 which won six times in her debut season.

“He is a typical Bettors Delight and very cool and laid-back,” Denis said.

Lot 71 is by Art Major from the Mach Three mare In Her Memory p,3,1:59.0 and he is from the family of Lennytheshark p,1:49.2 $3,007,585.

Lennytheshark’s first crop include Lot 22 in the Sydney Nutrien Sale.

The Howe family’s second Art Major colt is Lot 60 which is out of Equus Franco who is already the dam of four winners including Flem N Em p,1:49.6 $981,885 and Glenferrie Bronte p,1:51.4 $451,852.

Their one filly is Lot 63 which is by Sweet Lou from the McArdle mare Custom Franco which is the dam of four winners including The Pima Indian which unfortunately died as a 4yo when he looked to be a rising star in the stables of Gary Hall Snr.

“She is a big athletic filly who missed out on the white markings of the majority of the Sweet Lou’s.”

The grand-dam of Lot 63 is the Great Northern Oaks winner Cherubic which is the dam of nine winners including Franco Catapult p,1:49.4 $629,403.

Denis Howe would be more than happy to show you his four yearlings and inspection can be arranged by a call to 0418 692 273.

Nutrien 2021 Yearling Sale produces its first winner

At the 2021 Nutrien Yearling Sale Sydney trainer Brian Portelli paid $27,000 for Lot 73 which was a colt by Sweet Lou from the Astreos mare Miss Astronomical on account of Emily, Matt and Jess Howe from Mataranka Standardbreds from Wagga Wagga NSW.

Now gelded and named Shantilly he laced his opposition in winning the 2yo race on Tuesday afternoon at Menangle in a time of 1:56.8 for the mile with the final quarter being covered in a slick 26.6 seconds.
