Big result for Bettors Wish

There are nine yearlings by the first season sire Bettors Wish being offered across the 2024 Nutrien Yearling Sales.

Nothing surprising in that with Bettors Wish being a son of the supersire Bettors Delight and a great racehorse himself taking a record of 1:47.6 as a 4yo after recording 1:47.8 as a 3yo.

Bettors Wish was also the USTA’s 3yo Colt Pacer of the Year and 4yo Horse of the Year in those two seasons and retired to stud as the winner of 24 races and $2,601,233.

What is a little surprising about the nine yearlings being offered at the 2024 Nutrien Sales is that six of the nine are being offered at the Sydney Sale on the weekend of March 9th and 10th.

The three remaining Nutrien yearlings will be offered at the Melbourne Sale from April 12th through 14th.

Bettors Wish stood at Alabar Stud in New Zealand in 2021 and has 22 current yearlings on the ground in Australia courtesy of semen transport to go with the 47 he produced in New Zealand in 2022.

He now stands at Alabar Stud in Victoria and Brett Coffey would be more than happy to arrange an inspection.

Bettor’s Wish’s first American crop of 39 foals commenced racing in 2023 as 2yos and his 23 starters include eight winners.

The current 2yo crop has earnings of $884,857 which places him at the head of the First Season’s Sire list and ninth overall on the Leading Money Winning 2yo Sires List in North America.

Bettors Wish’s winners are headed by the colt Better Is Nice with $438,600 and the filly Pulp Fiction with $159,000 in earnings respectively.

On Sunday (US Time) Better Is Nice won the $400,000 Kentucky Sires Stakes Championship at Lexington lowering his 2yo record to 1:50.6 in the process as he downed a pair of Captaintreacherous colts in Ivy Park and Tua Many Captains.

Pulp Fiction took out the $240,000 New Jersey Sires Stakes Final for fillies on August 4th at The Meadowlands when she downed a fellow Bettor’s Wish filly in Odds On Steno in a time of 1:52.4.

With such an electric start to his US siring career prospective yearling purchasers would be well advised to check out each of the Bettors Wish yearlings in Sydney next March.

If you miss out buying one there is always the Melbourne Sale.

Lets go Crazy

There is always a touch of sadness and loss when a champion of the track retires from racing.

The Muscle Hill mare Dance Craze tr,1:55.6 won 24 of her 50 starts including three victories at Group One level and stakes of $551,780 and her racetrack brilliance was recognized with Australian Aged Trotting Mare of the Year honours in 2019 and 2020.

There is always a touch of happiness when a champion mare has her first foal enter a sale ring and the 2024 Nutrien Melbourne Yearling Sale will see Dance Craze’s first foal, a filly by the outstanding French trotter Bold Eagle, offered by Pat Driscoll’s Yabby Dam Farms.

Dance Craze’s dam La Coocaracha tr,1:58.5 $428,911 was voted Australian Trotter of the Year and New Zealand Trotter of the Year in 2002 after brilliant performances on both sides of the ditch.

Since her retirement from racing La Coocaracha has produced 10 winners from 13 foals of racing age including the 2022 Australian 2yo Colt/Gelding Trotter of the Year The Locomotive tr,2,1:58.4 $223,398 which was sold at the inaugural Nutrien Melbourne Yearling Sale.

La Coocaracha’s efforts as a broodmare resulted in her being named Australian Broodmare of the Year in 2020.

Yabby Dam Farms bred Dance Craze and Pat Driscoll is well-known for his support of the trotting side of the Standardbred industry. Yabby Dam Farms will offer 29 yearlings in Melbourne but the filly from Dance Craze will be the jewel in the crown.

Bold Eagle may not yet be a household name in Australian Standardbred breeding circles but he was a champion racehorse taking a record of 1:50.0 and amassing stakes of $7,655,514 including a remarkable 24 at Group One level and a US Breeders Crown when he crossed the Atlantic.

A 12yo stallion, with his oldest progeny 7yos, Bold Eagle is already the sire of 45 individual $100,000 earners in Europe including the colt Aetos Kronos tr,1:52.6 $1,384,226 and the filly Green Grass tr,1:54.6 $1,201,216.

Yabby Dam Farms equalled an Australian Record at Maryborough on Monday afternoon when they bred five winners at the meeting which featured 11 heats of the trotters section of the Vicbred Super Series across 2yos and 3yos.

The previous record of five winners at a meeting for a breeder was achieved by PJ & L R Medhurst at Mount Gambier in South Australia on 17th January 2014.

For the record the five winners bred by Yabby Dam Farms at Maryborough on Monday were Preferred Love (2yo Fillies), The Locomotive (3yo Colts & Geldings), Stevie Gee (3yo Colts & Geldings), Valtino (2yo Colts & Geldings) and Rapid Return (3yo Fillies).

Encipher wins the Eureka

Encipher will go down in history as the inaugural winner of the Eureka for breeder/owner Tyson Linke and slot holder Summit Bloodstock.

The 2024 Nutrien Sydney Yearling Sale provides an opportunity to buy a relative of Encipher per medium of a colt by Always B Miki from the Bettors Delight mare Real Intentions which is part of the Brooklyn Lodge draft.

Real Intentions was a ten time winner of $81,574 with a record of 1:55.1 and her Christian Cullen dam Tiz A Cullen is a three-quarter sister to the In The Pocket mare Bizzie Girl which is the grand-dam of Encipher.

Bizzie Girl is a half-sister to the smart pacer Im Percy The Punter p,3,1:56.4 $332,067 but punters on the Eureka failed to decipher her form and the mare started at $26.

Bizzie Girl produced the smart Bettors Delight mare Eliza Dushku won the Group Two NSW Pink Bonnet on her way to $218,254 in stakes and she is also the dam of Our Cavort which won 15 races in South Australia before being retired to stud.

Our Cavort’s first foal was Encipher which, after Saturday night’s win, has now won 17 races and has stakes of $1,584,479.

Encipher won twice at Group One level as a 2yo and was voted Australian 2yo Filly Pacer of the Year before winning the Victoria Oaks and Australasian Breeders Crown at Group One level as a 3yo.

In addition to the maternal link to Encipher the Brooklyn Lodge colt from Real Intentions is bred on the same cross as Western Australian 2yo Gold Bullion and 3yo WA Oaks winner Taking The Miki p,2,1:54.2 $303,603.

The oldest Southern Hemisphere winners by Always B Miki out of Bettors Delight mares are current 4yos and there are already 16 winners bred on the cross.

The same cross in the USA has produced a pair of 2yo USA Breeders Crown winners in the colt Perfect Sting p,3,1:48.2 $1,808,147 and the filly Niki Hill p,3,1:48.8 $1,342,452.

Red Hot gelding tops the 2023 Nutrien Masters Sale selling for $90,000

The 2023 Nutrien Masters Sale completed yesterday afternoon with some very happy buyers taking away some high-quality open horses that they will be able to take straight to a competition. This is the benefit of purchasing in the open horse market, and there have been horses sold over the last two days that we will be excited to follow their new owners’ journey and see them back next year for the Graduates draft.

Top price of the sale was a first for any of the Nutrien Sales, with a gelding outselling the mares and the stallion on offer. The quality of the breeding in this sale was deep and we are sure that the new owners will be rewarded with success on their purchase.

With horses still selling over the next few days, at the end of the event, we sold 81 of the 112 lots offered with a 72.32% clearance, gross is currently at $2,042,500 and the average price is $25,216.05.

Considering the economic climate and downturn of the cattle market, the Nutrien Team is pleased with the result and support of the sale. In our 2nd year of this concept, this Premier Open Age performance horse sale has very similar results to the first year and we believe it will only grow stronger from here.

The Top price Gelding and the top of the sale sold for $90,000 was Lot 119 RED HOT METAL, who lived up to his name and would make owner Serge Rolland a very happy vendor. A fully trained cutting gelding who is a multiple-aged event finalist and winner of the 2023 NCHA Limited Open Derby, is by the METALLIC CAT sire HEAVY METAL and out of a DOCS FRECKLES OAK mare in LADY SO SMART, whose dam was LADY IN RED.

An exciting sale for the top price mare of the sale for $82,000 was Lot 109 CONDALISA SMOOTH who was sold to Pat & Liz Cleaver from Nimmitabel, NSW.

Vendors Paige Nancarrow and Callum Moore couldn’t wipe the smile of their faces! This 5yo mare is by SMOOTH AS A CAT out of the HAZELWOOD CONMAN mare KEMMIS CONDALISA ACRES.

Only a few lots apart, Lot 104 BELLA GATO sold for $80,000, on account of the Poole family to Kareela Grazing Company from Springsure in QLD . She is a 6yo mare by STYLIN CAT out of a DOCS SPINIFEX MARE in SPECIAL T SPIN.

The only stallion in the sale was Lot 91 BRANCHVALE IM SCRAP METAL, a 5yo stallion by METALLIC CAT out of a PEPTOBOONSMAL mare, PEPTO SEES STARS. Sold on account of EMDEE Enterprises, this stallion is heading to Urunga, NSW for purchaser STEVSUSA Pty Ltd.

Other top prices yesterday were;

Lot 123 AC HUGHES ME, a 5yo mare on account of EDAND Property Pty Ltd sold for $80,000 to Annabella Baliente from Spring Ridge, NSW.

Lot 132 PRETTY N STYLISH, a 4yo mare on account of Holly Clayden sold for $55,000 to Kareela Grazing Company, Springsure, QLD.
