This Gawn going from strength to strength – 2023 Melbourne Yearling Sale

Melbourne AFL star Max Gawn is on the sidelines for a number of weeks after surffering an injury in the opening game of the 2023 season.

His Standardbred namesake Gawn continues to go from strength to strength and on Wednesday night at Bendigo he took out a heat of the Vicbred Home Grown Classic.

Gawn, a son of Captaintreacherous, lowered his best time to 1:55.9 on Wednesday night and has now won two of his three starts in races.

Lot 512 in this weekend’s Nutrien Yearling Sale is a colt by Bettors Delight and is the first foal from a half-sister to Gawn in Annalise.

Annalise is a full-sister to Goodtime Grace 1:54.6 and a three-quarter sister to the smart Somebeachsomewhere mare Petillante 3,1:53.4 $183,640 which won at Group Three level as a 3yo and was runner-up in a Victoria Oaks.

Lot 512 is being offered by Benstud Standardbreds and they will be more than happy to parade this Bettors Delight colt for you on the weekend.

Inspections all day today and join us for the Woodlands Parade at 12 Noon.

In 2022 Downbytheseaside was the Leading Money Winning Sire of 3yos in North America – 2023 MELBOURNE YEARLING SALE NEWS

More often than not what happens in North American harness racing is reflected in Southern Hemisphere harness racing.

Every so often there is a statistic which seems out of the ordinary in that it isn’t reflected immediately in the other hemisphere.

In 2022 Downbytheseaside was the Leading Money Winning Sire of 3yos in North America with his 117 3yo foals producing 93 starters which collectively earned $6,541,967 and he finished well clear of Captaintreacherous whose 103 foals produced 66 starters which earned $5,877,068.

Downbytheseaside has produced three millionaires from his 2022 USA 3yos in Pebble Beach p,3,1:48.2 $1,720,875, Bythemissal p,3,1:48.6 $1,168,925 and the filly Sea Silk p,3,1:48.6 $1,061,154.

With his second Southern Hemisphere crop hitting the racetrack this season as 2yos he has added five 2yo winners this season to his siring record in Australia.

The unbeaten Western Australian colt Waverider won the $100,000 WA Sales Classic eased down by 25 metres rating 1:55.4 for the 1730 metres.

Another West Australian bred son in Off The Charts has won twice this season as a 2yo and finished fourth in the WA Sales Classic.

His New Zealand bred son Sinbad was a good third in last week’s $137,000 Group One Northern Derby at Alexandra Park behind Merlin and Son Of Mac.

His Kiwi bred filly Aardiebytheseaside was twice placed at Group One level as a 2yo and won three times in her first season of racing on her way to earnings of $64,890.

There are five yearlings by Downbytheseaside in the Nutrien Melbourne Yearling Sale this weekend and Lot 527 is interesting in that it is out of a mare by Badlands Hanover – a son of Western Hanover.

Two of Downbytheseaside’s USA millionaires are out of mares by sons of Western Hanover. Pebble Beach is out of a Western Ideal mare while Bythemissal is from a mare by Western Terror.

Lot 441 is also of particular interest to pedigree buffs in that it is out of the Sportswriter mare Sporty Max.

Sportswriter’s dam Precious Beauty is a half-sister to Special Beauty which is the grand-dam of Downbytheseaside.

The other two Melbourne lots by Downbytheseaside are 426 and 662.

THANK YOU to Alan Parker for these great insights and updated pedigrees each week. Amazing work.

Time to get yourself ready for the sale!

The juggernaut rolls on – 2023 Melbourne Yearling Sale 2nd & 3rd April 2023

Captaintreacherous, a son of Somebeachsomewhere, has made a blistering start in his attempt to become Australia’s Leading Sire of 2yos for the third straight year.

In 2022 Captaintreacherous sired 36 individual winners of 84 races and an Australian Record of $1,659,129 in stakes.

On Saturday night at Bathurst Captaintreacherous USA sired the winners of both the Group One Bathurst Gold Tiara and Group One Bathurst Gold Crown to surge to the top of the Australian 2yo Sires List for 2023.

The unbeaten filly Lux Aeterna has won each of her four starts in 2023 and Saturday’s win lifted her earnings to $112,432.

The Captaintreacherous colt Chart Topper brought up his second win in three starts and has now banked $81,048.

With just seven 2yo starters this season Captaintreacherous is the sire of the winners of $235,547 with average earnings of $33,650 per starter.

Second on the national list is Sweet Lou whose 29 2yo starters in 2023 include a remarkable 11 individual winners of $226,098.

On the subject of the Bathurst Gold Crown, Lot 438 (*pictured) is of particular interest in that this colt, on account of Lauriston Bloodstock, is by a quality son of Somebeachsomewhere in Poster Boy from a three-time Group One winner in Speak No Evil 1:50.9 $354,300.

Unique double Group One opportunity – 2023 MELBOURNE YEARLING SALE

Breeders Brian and Marilyn Gourley have been breeding from the Sokys Atom mare Sokys Number and the mares daughters for close to 25 years and this Saturday night they have a rare opportunity to breed two Group One 2yo winners at the same meeting.

Sokys Number is a former Australian Broodmare of the Year with her son Saab winning at Group One level as a 2yo, 3yo and 4yo and that colt’s full-brother Talladega being named Australian 2yo Pacer of the Year.

Among the fillies Brian and Marilyn Gourley bred from Sokys Number was the Classic Garry winner Saabette p,1:56.2 which won nine races and is now the dam of eight winners including the Tamworth City Cup winner Gottashopearly p,1:53.1 $200,074, the Group Two 2yo winner Bettors Ace p,1:56.0 $182,156 and the Group Three Vicbred Platinum winner Lierre Nior p,1:54.4 $131,629.

Saabette’s 13th foal, a filly by Tintin In America, is Lot 412 in Nutrien’s Melbourne Yearling Sale which is part of the first day’s selling on Sunday 2nd April.

Two daughters of Saabette will be represented on Saturday night in the $150,000 Group One Finals of the Gold Crown and Gold Tiara.

The previously mentioned Lierre Noir in the dam of the Sweet Lou colt Tomahawk Bart which took out the first heat of the Gold Crown last Friday night.

The first heat of the Gold Tiara last Wednesday was won by the For A Reason filly Forever Skyfall.

Forever Skyfall is the first foal from the Bettors Delight mare Swedish Miss. Placed at her only two starts as a 3yo Swedish Miss is by Bettors Delight from Saabette.

It will be a remarkable result if Tomahawk Bart and Forever Skyfall can win their respective finals and add even more kudos to Lot 412 the following week.

Three of the best from Heath Bourke – 2023 Melbourne Yearling Sale

By Peter Wharton

Boutique Portland breeder Heath Bourke is one of a group of emerging, young broodmare owners in Victoria.

A member of a well known Western Districts harness racing family, Heath has bred several smart performers from his small, select broodmare band.

They include the Victoria Premiere Stakes winner and NSW Pink Bonnet placegetter Remi Lou, Will He Reign, who finished runner-up in the $150,000 Gold Bullion Final, Yappas Courage (8 wins), the dual Melton winner Pippo Nien, Northern Terror and last season’s Victorian two-year-old winner Jeremy Lou, who he sold at the 2021 Nutrien Equine Sale.

Heath Bourke Bloodstock will be represented by three colts at the Nutrien Equine Melbourne Yearling Sale on April 1, 2 and 3 and all have plenty in their favour on the score of blood.

The pick of the Bourke draft could be Lot 647, a brown colt by the Top Ten sire A Rocknroll Dance from the Melton winner Metromint (1:54.7), dam of the promising Jilliby Fernando (1:53) and a member of the family that produced the Australian 2YO Filly of the Year Nostra Villa.

“He’s a large framed, athletic colt with a beautiful temperament. He has a huge appetite and a great work ethic,” Heath said.

Lot 624, a strongly built colt also by A Rocknroll Dance, ranks as a half-brother to three sub 2:00 winners including Jeremy Lou, being out of a What’s Next mare from the famed Parisienne tribe. He is thus closely related to the Bathurst Gold Chalice winner Northern Frontier and the good Melton victor Truth And Courage.

The third of the Heath Bourke Bloodstock draft is Lot 384, a handsome Sportswriter colt from the same family as Lot 624.
