This Gawn going from strength to strength – 2023 Melbourne Yearling Sale

Melbourne AFL star Max Gawn is on the sidelines for a number of weeks after surffering an injury in the opening game of the 2023 season.

His Standardbred namesake Gawn continues to go from strength to strength and on Wednesday night at Bendigo he took out a heat of the Vicbred Home Grown Classic.

Gawn, a son of Captaintreacherous, lowered his best time to 1:55.9 on Wednesday night and has now won two of his three starts in races.

Lot 512 in this weekend’s Nutrien Yearling Sale is a colt by Bettors Delight and is the first foal from a half-sister to Gawn in Annalise.

Annalise is a full-sister to Goodtime Grace 1:54.6 and a three-quarter sister to the smart Somebeachsomewhere mare Petillante 3,1:53.4 $183,640 which won at Group Three level as a 3yo and was runner-up in a Victoria Oaks.

Lot 512 is being offered by Benstud Standardbreds and they will be more than happy to parade this Bettors Delight colt for you on the weekend.

Inspections all day today and join us for the Woodlands Parade at 12 Noon.

In 2022 Downbytheseaside was the Leading Money Winning Sire of 3yos in North America – 2023 MELBOURNE YEARLING SALE NEWS

More often than not what happens in North American harness racing is reflected in Southern Hemisphere harness racing.

Every so often there is a statistic which seems out of the ordinary in that it isn’t reflected immediately in the other hemisphere.

In 2022 Downbytheseaside was the Leading Money Winning Sire of 3yos in North America with his 117 3yo foals producing 93 starters which collectively earned $6,541,967 and he finished well clear of Captaintreacherous whose 103 foals produced 66 starters which earned $5,877,068.

Downbytheseaside has produced three millionaires from his 2022 USA 3yos in Pebble Beach p,3,1:48.2 $1,720,875, Bythemissal p,3,1:48.6 $1,168,925 and the filly Sea Silk p,3,1:48.6 $1,061,154.

With his second Southern Hemisphere crop hitting the racetrack this season as 2yos he has added five 2yo winners this season to his siring record in Australia.

The unbeaten Western Australian colt Waverider won the $100,000 WA Sales Classic eased down by 25 metres rating 1:55.4 for the 1730 metres.

Another West Australian bred son in Off The Charts has won twice this season as a 2yo and finished fourth in the WA Sales Classic.

His New Zealand bred son Sinbad was a good third in last week’s $137,000 Group One Northern Derby at Alexandra Park behind Merlin and Son Of Mac.

His Kiwi bred filly Aardiebytheseaside was twice placed at Group One level as a 2yo and won three times in her first season of racing on her way to earnings of $64,890.

There are five yearlings by Downbytheseaside in the Nutrien Melbourne Yearling Sale this weekend and Lot 527 is interesting in that it is out of a mare by Badlands Hanover – a son of Western Hanover.

Two of Downbytheseaside’s USA millionaires are out of mares by sons of Western Hanover. Pebble Beach is out of a Western Ideal mare while Bythemissal is from a mare by Western Terror.

Lot 441 is also of particular interest to pedigree buffs in that it is out of the Sportswriter mare Sporty Max.

Sportswriter’s dam Precious Beauty is a half-sister to Special Beauty which is the grand-dam of Downbytheseaside.

The other two Melbourne lots by Downbytheseaside are 426 and 662.

THANK YOU to Alan Parker for these great insights and updated pedigrees each week. Amazing work.

Time to get yourself ready for the sale!

Egmont Park draft a ‘must see’ at Magic Millions

By Peter Wharton

Egmont Park Stud at Biddeston on the Darling Downs is one of the bedrocks of Australian breeding – a constant at the Brisbane yearling sales for more than 50 years – and the inspiration of businessman and high profile breeder-owner Kevin Seymour and his wife, Kay.

This year the noted Group 1 nursery will present a 15-strong draft at Nutrien Equine’s Sunshine Stars Yearling Sale at Magic Millions, Gold Coast on Sunday, March 12, all selected for their class, presence, style and bloodlines.

Raised on rich limestone soils at Egmont Park, they hail from the same paddocks as outstanding pacers Colt Thirty One, Majestic Mach, Fame Assured, Good Lookin Girl, Cherry Cheer and Rhapsody In Red, all Group 1 winners.

The draft includes youngsters from the first crop of USA 2YO Colt of the Year and North America Cup hero Captain Crunch, the second crop of NZ 3YO of the Year and dual Derby winner Ohoka Punter, a colt by siring sensation Captaintreacherous, two fillies by USA 3YO Colt of the Year and leading first season sire Downbytheseaside, a colt and a filly by world champion and emerging sire Always B Miki and a filly by the Inter Dominion champion Mr Feelgood.

The yearlings all belong to ‘black type’ families that have been nurtured at Egmont Park over five decades.

One of the most sought after yearlings will be Lot 351, a Captaintreacherous colt out of the Art Major mare Favourite Miss, a half-sister to the multiple Group winner and placegetter Fame Assured, the QBred Triad 3YO winner Frankie Rocks and Feel The Faith.

Other yearlings closely related to Fame Assured are Lot 352, a Captain Crunch filly out of the Albion Park winner Feel The Charm, and Lot 373, an Ohoka Punter colt from the Somebeachsomewhere mare Ipanema Beach.

The QBred Breeders Classic 2YO and Triad 3YO winner Get In The Groove has two close relatives in the sale, being Lot 358, an Ohoka Punter filly from the Mach Three mare Go Be Happy, and Lot 361, an Always B Miki colt out of the 1:56 Mr Feelgood mare Happy Feelings.

Rich Heritage, winner of the QBred Breeders Classic 2YO and runner-up in the NSW Ladyship Mile and Queensland Oaks, figures prominently in the pedigrees of Lot 248, an Always B Miki filly from the Bettor’s Delight mare Long Legs Lou, Lot 277, a Downbytheseaside filly from the $90,000 earner Remember Ruby, and Lot 278, a filly by Ohoka Punter from the Mach Three mare Rich Ruby Red.

Lizzie Maguire, a NZ Harness Jewels and Great Northern Oaks winner, is a close relative of two yearlings in the draft, namely Lot 257, a filly by Captain Crunch from Misstori (by Mr Feelgood), and Lot 297, a colt by Ohoka Punter from the Mach Three mare Talent In Spades.

There’s a Downbytheseaside granddaughter of the Seymour Nursery winner Rhapsody In Red (Lot 276), a Mr Feelgood sister to the QBred Breeders Classic 2YO and Triad 3YO winner A Good Chance (Lot 334), Ohoka Punter fillies from the 1:56 winner Merrymach, whose dam is a half-sister to the Australian 2YO and 3YO of the Year Majestic Mach (Lot 254) and Go The Gold, a Mach Three daughter of the NSW Ladyship Mile and Queen of the Pacific winner Good Lookin Girl (Lot 359), and an Ohoka Punter colt from an Art Major daughter of the Australian and Victoria Oaks winner Cherry Cheer (Lot 335).

To arrange an inspection contact Egmont Park Stud manager Peter Bell 0418 885 033.

John Coffey joins Nutrien Standardbred as official breeding and sales consultant

We are excited to announce that John Coffey has come on board with the Nutrien Equine Standardbred team as an official breeding and sales consultant.
John needs no introduction to the Industry, his passion for standardbreds starting like many, on the side of the track.
John grew up on a dairy farm, approximately 80 km south of Perth, WA and it wasn’t until finishing schooling that his interest in horses was aroused.
That initial interest was as a “Punter and a poor one“ at Gloucester Park on a Friday night.
Horses such as Daintys Daughter, Radiant Oro, and then the mighty Mount Eden nurtured an interest in breeding.
In 1977 John’s full-time employment in the Equine industry commenced with an administrative position with Dalgety Bloodstock in Ascot, WA.
At that time Dalgety Bloodstock conducted the Annual Yearling sales for both Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds in Victoria, WA, and SA.
Over the next 45 years that passion for the Standardbred Industry continued unabated. His involvement included breeding and selling horses under the banner of Patrician Park [best horse bred was Shattering Class $810,302], a long time Senior role with Alabar Bloodstock in Echuca, Victoria, and part of the Management team of Gloucester Standardbreds Sales Company in WA.
Currently, John is a Bloodstock consultant for Llowalong Farms in northern Victoria and has now taken on a role as a Breeding consultant with us at Nutrien Equine.
We welcome John and look forward to his updates on his travels as he visits consigners leading up to our 2023 sales.

Yabby Dam sold top price trotter to Alabar at Nutrien equine Yearling Sale 2021

Huge incentives from Haras de Trotteurs attract Trotting entries

Nutrien Equine are excited with the news that the Australian Premier Trotting Sale will be incorporated into the Nutrien Equine Yearling Sale to be held at Oaklands Junction Complex in Melbourne on Sunday, April 3, 2022.

The combination of these two successful trotting yearling sales into the Melbourne catalogue, will see an outstanding opportunity for the 2022 offering of trotting yearlings’ fillies and colts, to go on and compete in the 2023 Race Series in Melbourne. Each will be chasing the huge incentive of $62,500 which has been generously sponsored by Haras des Trotteurs, signifying their continued commitment to the Trotting Industry. These 2022 graduates will also have the opportunity to compete for a further $250,000 as three year old’s in 2024.

The 2022 Nutrien – APTS combined catalogue, is anticipated to be the strongest lineup of trotting yearlings ever offered for sale in the southern hemisphere; bringing top quality yearlings by some of the world’s leading trotting sires. With sale entries committed from Australia’s leading Trotting stables, this united catalogue certainly paves the way for what will be an incredible lineup of trotting yearlings to be offered for sale at the 2022 Melbourne Sale on April 3rd.

Added to this exciting announcement is a fantastic lineup of pacing yearlings, bringing the total graduate prize money for the Nutrien 2022 yearling sales to $925,000 in our second year.

Excitement Levels High All Round For The 2022 Nutrien Yearling Sale In Sydney

The exciting 3yo filly Ladies In Red resumed racing at Ballarat last night with a ridiculously easy win in the A J Prendergast Memorial Oaks.

Driven by David Moran for trainer Emma Stewart, Ladies In Red worked into the breeze early but when it got to the business end, she ran away from her rivals to win easing down by 12 metres with her last 800 metres in 55.00 seconds.

The win took the daughter of Mach Three to a career record of 10 wins and one second in just 11 starts and earnings of $271,840.

She took out the Australian 2yo Pacing Filly of the Year title last season and looks on target for another super campaign.

One person nearly as excited as the connections of Ladies In Red last night was breeder John McGeechan who will offer a filly from a half-sister to Ladies In Red in the 2022 Nutrien Yearling Sale.

John’s filly is by boom sire American Ideal from the unraced Somebeachsomewhere mare Someone To Love.

Someone To Love’s first foal, the 3yo gelding Curly James broke his maiden status with a win at Cranbourne last Sunday rating a tick outside 2:00.

What was impressive about the win was the final 200 metres when Curly James at just his fifth start literally flew down the straight from a seemingly impossible position to get up in the final stride.

Someone To Love’s second foal is the current 2yo Amani a gelding by Sweet Lou that has been placed at two of its six race starts this season including a heat of the Bathurst Gold Crown.

Based on the recent efforts of Ladies In Red, Curly James and Amani there will be a lot more excitement in the countdown to the 2022 Nutrien Yearling Sale and some significant updates to this particular pedigree.

Nominations for the 2022 Nutrien Standardbred Yearling Sales to be held in Sydney Feb 20, 2022 and Melbourne April 3, 2022.
