When 2yo colt Firefly took out the Bathurst Gold Crown Silver Consolation of Wednesday night he became the third winner for first season sire Downbytheseaside.
He also became the 11th 2yo winner, all in sub 2:00 times, in the first three months of racing for graduates of the inaugural Nutrien Yearling Sale.
Firefly cost just $10,000 when he went under the hammer as Lot 26 last year and after Wednesday night’s win his earnings stand at $9,656.
The 2022 Nutrien Yearling Sale in Melbourne on April 3rd includes three lots by Downbytheseaside – two colts and one filly.
Lot 130 is a colt from Aunty Daph which is a half-sister to six winners including Detroit Dan p,1:56.8 $118,639 and the dam of Safari p,1:55.7 $535,445.
Lot 132, a colt from Bettor Abs p,1:59.8, and Lot 229, a filly from Rubeelee p,2,1:58.0, are out of mares by Bettors Delight. *pictured
The cross of Downbytheseaside from a Bettors Delight mare produced the standout 2yo filly Sea Silk p,2,1:50.6 $584,092 in North America last year.
Both stallions stand at Woodlands Stud in New Zealand and the stud has taken the bold step of selling a yearling in Australia for the first time at Nutrien’s Melbourne Sale.
A first foal, Lot 236 is a filly by the stud’s flagship stallion Bettors Delight from the Mach Three mare Sharing The Love p,3,1:58.4.
Sharing The Love is a full-sister to the 3yo Vicbred Super Series winner Pacifico Dream p,3,1:51.0 $317,750 and a half-sister to Queensland Oaks winner Momentslikethese p,3,1:55.7 $155,805.
Her dam Mint Julep is an unraced half-sister to Chariots Of Fire winner Guaranteed p,1:50.4 $856,316 which won at Group One level as a 2yo,3yo, 4yo and 5yo.
