Sydney shines for first Nutrien Equine Yearling Sale for 2022

With the benefit of a day to catch up on what has been a truly fantastic experience for the entire Nutrien Equine team, we would like to firstly congratulate all our sale vendors and in particular the preparers and workers that have put in the time to present such a fantastic catalogue of Australian Standardbreds not only to the Australian market, but the world stage.

These breeders should be incredibly proud of the way they present and set up these young athletes for their careers in racing and it has been a privilege to offer the Sydney draft of horses to the market.

The momentum started earlier in the week in New Zealand flowed on with strong interest from all states including Tasmania as well as interest from New Zealand buyers, who also operated in the market.

Top Price of the sale was an equal affair with two colts reaching $150,000. First up was Lot 40, an AMERICAN IDEAL USA colt out of the 2021 Australian Broodmare of the year, BENINJURD. This Benstud Standardbred superstar mare is the dam of TOUGH TILLY, SOMEDAN AND LIGHTING DAN. This colt was also a full brother to CENTENARIO, 1:53.5 $332,520. This colt was purchased by Edward and Michelle Caruana and their son Blake made the trip up from Victoria to do some great bidding in the arena. Blake was really pleased to get him “I had a plane booked in the afternoon and really was happy to go home knowing we got him”

Joining Benstud was Victorian breeders Alabar Bloodstock who bought their impressive draft to our Sydney sale and also topped the sale with their impressive Lot 94, a SOMEBEACHSOMEWHERE colt out of NIKE FRANCO NZ. This is her first foal and wasn’t he impressive in the ring. NIKE FRANCO NZ had an outstanding racing career with 35 wins and over $900,000 in career earnings, he was to be a standout and he for sure was on the day.

Congratulations to the purchasers, Stuart Watt who was the man in the arena on behalf of himself, Tom Hogan, and Tim Bunning who managing syndicate on behalf Clayton Tonkin and Emma Stewart clients. Stuart said, “I’m ecstatic! Clayton loves this colt, said he is very special, and it will head to Clayton and Emma and we will go on from there”. Stuart said the syndicate left him to his own devices on bidding on this colt, “The pressure was on for another one I was the underbidder on, but we were so happy to get the Nike Franco colt, he is really special”
