The Decision that Changed the Performance Horse Industry
It was Chrissy’s idea to breed Conman, which turned out to be one of their best decisions. She chose the quality mare Hazelwood Romance, a multiple campdraft and royal ASH show winner, and bred her to Dogwood Commet. Terry and Chrissy were always pleased with him—he always did everything “proper.” The first draft they ever took him to, “He done something pretty special on his own accord,” and that’s when Terry knew they had something special. Terry vividly remembers the first run: “Going to the gate, the steer sped up and went to go past the gate, and he stepped up and blocked him, turned back, and stepped on the other side and put him through the gate” Terry said “He done all that on his own accord.”
Hazelwood Conman: The Horse
Hazelwood Conman’s performance career is a testament to his extraordinary ability. Under the guidance of renowned horseman Terry Hall, Conman won the Stallion Shootout in both 2012 and 2013. His performance style is characterised by ease and confidence, with Christine Hall describing it as “When you come off the camp it’s like being on cruise control. When he does it, he does it by himself.” This effortless style on the campdraft course, combined with a calm and adaptable demeanour, has made him a favourite among riders and breeders. As Terry Hall once said, “I don’t think there’s anything else better about.”
Hazelwood Conman’s influence extends far beyond his own competition career. As a sire, he has been an absolute game-changer in the industry.
